THE NEED

15% OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION LIVE WITH A DISABILITY. 80% OF THEM ARE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES (UN).

In many countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, there are many myths surrounding people with disabilities. Such misconceptions are fuelled by a lack of knowledge or weak legislation. As a result, this leads to:

• EXTREME POVERTY: Disabling conditions may be expensive for families to accommodate, especially in the communities where we work, where public resources are restricted.

• RESTRICTED EDUCATION: In Africa, less than 10% of children with a disability are enrolled in primary education (UN). For many of our participants, Brass for Africa is their only form of education.

• HARMFUL STIGMA: Young people with disabilities often experience rejection and seclusion due to misconceptions and prejudices (UN). Feelings of loneliness and isolation may be reinforced by activities and spaces that are inaccessible to persons with disabilities.

OUR GOAL

AT BRASS FOR AFRICA, DISABILITY INCLUSION IS ONE OF OUR 5 FOCUS AREAS

By 2028, our aim is to:

• FACILITATE THE INVOLVEMENT OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: By 2028, to reflect the global population statistics, our aim is for 15% of our programme participants to be children and young people who are living with a disability.

• REDUCE STIGMA AND DRIVE DISABILITY INCLUSION IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Engaging children with disabilities in performances, community marches and events emphasises the importance of including them equally in society.

• INCREASE OUR IMPACT BY EXPLORING ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW MUSIC THERAPY PROGRAMME: Using music to relieve stress, encourage creative development and improve overall well-being.
