Kawempe Youth Centre

In 2017 Brass for Africa partnered with Kawempe Youth Centre. This initiative was originally started with the support from Plan International’s Safer Cities For Girls programme – an initiative aiming to tackle unequal power relations and challenge harmful social norms that perpetuate the insecurity and exclusion of girls in Kampala, Uganda.

As part of this movement, Brass for Africa launched a comprehensive twice-weekly Music & Life-Skills programme in three community based organisations across impoverished districts within Kampala, including Kawempe Youth Centre.

Kawempe Youth Centre is an organisation that works with girls and young women in the community to provide a safe space where they can come and gain access to education and information services. This project aims to address the gap between poverty and education, improve the chances of employability and boost community development. Its premise is that engaging young and vulnerable people in activities, particularly girls and young women, will keep them safe and lead to more positive outcomes.

Our partnership with Kawempe Youth Centre creates a safe space for girls and women to learn and perform equally with their male counterparts. By training girls and boys together and arranging regular performance opportunities, girls gain fundamental skills that boost their self-confidence, resilience and sense of belonging. This empowers them to venture out to occupy their rightful space in society.
